The SLA is the largest lake association in the state of New Hampshire and is actively involved in the conservation and preservation of the Squam Lakes. It was founded in 1904. The SLA has conservation and preservation stewardship of Moon and Bowman Islands on Squam thus adding two of the most attractive large islands open for public enjoyment. The SLA has provided leadership in the preservation of the lake that has resulted in landmark legislation barring jet skiis and establishing boat speed limits and waterskiing restrictions. SLA also retains a chemist and participates in partnership with the University of New Hampshire and the Squam Lakes Natural Science Center in preserving the pristine quality of the water in the lake.
To encourage community among Squam residents, the SLA hosts a social hour and dinner following its annual summer meeting providing an excellent opportunity to meet many of the people who have been so active in keeping Squam the jewel it is today. In addition, youth programs are held during the summer with a combined focus of recreation, conservation and education. Their quarterly newsletter, the Loon Flyer, keeps members informed of all new projects and events in the area
